Review gating means filtering customers so only happy ones are asked for a public review. It violates Google policy — here is what counts and what to do instead.
Review gating is the practice of screening customers before asking for a public review, so that only satisfied customers are directed to Google while unhappy ones are routed to a private feedback form instead.
It is usually implemented as a two-step flow: ask "how was your experience?" first, then send the five-star responses to your Google review link and everyone else to an internal complaints form. That branching step is the violation.
Google's review policies require that businesses do not discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive ones. Gating does both.
The reasoning is straightforward: a rating built from a filtered sample is not a rating of the business, it is a rating of the business's happiest customers. That misleads the people the reviews exist to inform.
The line is whether the request itself is conditional. Asking everyone is fine. Asking only some people, based on how they are likely to rate you, is not.
Enforcement is inconsistent, which lulls businesses into thinking it is safe. The realistic risks are review removal, profile penalties, and in some jurisdictions regulatory exposure.
Beyond Google, competition and consumer authorities in several markets treat filtered reviews as misleading advertising. The US Federal Trade Commission has taken action against businesses for suppressing negative reviews.
The compliant approach is simpler than gating and works better over time: ask everyone, make it easy, and handle the negatives well in public.
A handful of critical reviews among many positive ones actually increases credibility. Profiles with a perfect five-star average and no criticism read as suspicious to experienced shoppers.

Once you are collecting reviews without filtering, showing them on your website is the highest-return step. A live widget pulls the real set, including the occasional critical one.
That honesty is a feature. Visitors trust a 4.6 with visible imperfections far more than a flawless 5.0 that looks curated.

It violates Google's review policies everywhere. Whether it is unlawful depends on jurisdiction — in the US the FTC has acted against businesses for suppressing negative reviews, and several other consumer protection regimes treat filtered reviews as misleading.
If you are systematically screening by expected sentiment, yes. Informally not chasing one customer you know had a poor experience is different from operating a process that filters by rating.
You can survey customers, but the Google review request must go to everyone regardless of their survey response. The violation is branching the review request based on the answer.
Several review platforms still ship this feature. That it exists in the product does not make it compliant with Google's policies — switch it off.
A small proportion of critical reviews generally increases trust, because it signals the review set is genuine. What damages conversion is a low overall rating or negative reviews left without a response.
